In an era were products are mostly mass produced to fit most of the users, Surge wearable diverts away from this notion, and introduces a hybrid interaction between the user and their product. The studio, which is taught by Alessando Zomparelli, exposes a powerful tool that allows designers to explore new modelling techniques through a set of parameters that fits their clients need, shape and aesthetics. In this course, participants were able to add a new skill and explore Blender 3D. Blender 3D is an open source software that embeds powerful tools such as modifiers which allows the user to perform any kind of effects on the model in a non-destructive way. For wearable design we have used in particular the shrinkwrap technique to model the accessories along the surface of the human body. With such tool, we were able to simulate multiple variations that showcases different aspects of the design.


Alessandro is member of Co-de-iT as part of the design team for the Reefs project, a 3D printed reef system computationally designed for adaptation to marine environment. He is also tutor in several international workshops about computational design, including the AAVS Jordan 2013 and AAVS Dubai 2016.

His background in Engineering and Architectural fields drived him to explore the opportunities of computational design in combination with 3D printing technologies at different scales, from architecture to human body.

In 2012 he co-founded MHOX, a generative design studio focused on the development of body extensions with particular attention to customized masks, medical devices and fashion products.

Since 2015 he is author and developer of Tissue, an open-source add-on for Blender with the aim to make some Computational Design workflows more easy and intuitive.

He is currently Contract Professor at Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna and at Istituto Marangoni (Milan), where he teaches digital design techniques for product design.

SURGE Medical Accessories a Crossfield between medical accessories and digital design, is a studio taught by Alessandro Zomparelli using Blender 3D and Tissue. In Biology, tissues are organizations of similar cells that are composed of organs and living organisms. Due to the specific qualities of singles cells, some peculiar functions of the tissue emerge; conditioning its effectiveness and determining its’ contribution to the life of the organism. The same biological principles can be applied to any design: when the designer explores these particular parametric strategies, it is important to work with a tool that provides efficient feedback and allows one to easily introduce a wide range of variations leading to significant qualities for a design evolutionary process.
